“Does Ithaca really exist if you have to force it?” Alexandros Voulgaris returns with SWELL, his ninth feature film, based on Ioanna Karystiani’s novel of the same name. It premieres at the Onassis Stegi shortly before its theatrical release, ready to make waves. A co-production of Onassis Culture.

Every journey carries its secrets. Experienced captain Mitsos Avgoustis refuses to leave the sea behind, struggling with the swell that unsettles his mind. He has spent twelve years away from Greece, estranged from his family and at odds with his employers, but maintaining unbreakable bonds with the 22 sailors aboard the cargo ship ATHOS III. Defiant, he manages to secure cargo, call at ports, load and unload, silently roaming the waters of the Pacific. Day and night, he wrestles with the relentless gales of the solitary journeys of his mind and heart, where his secret has dropped anchor. This is the synopsis of Alexandros Voulgaris’ highly anticipated film. A cinematic journey about sea and land, family and life at sea, duty and desire, homeland and the absence of homeland.
