Masterclass with Tiago Rodrigues: Τhe Kitchen

Alongside the two performances concluding this season’s Onassis Stegi homage to his work, the internationally acclaimed playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues, Artistic Director of the Festival d’Avignon since 2021, leads a masterclass dedicated to the art of playwriting and directing.

From “By Heart” to “Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists,” and from “Lovers’ Chorus” to “La Distance,” Tiago Rodrigues opens the doors to his personal ‘kitchen’—the creative space where ideas develop and performances take shape—and shares his experience as a playwright and director, revealing the way he ‘cooks’ his works.

From the first spark of an idea to the final show of a tour, he will offer stories and concrete examples that illuminate the essentials of his theatrical practice. He will also engage in an open dialogue with participants, addressing the questions and challenges that artists may encounter in their own ‘kitchens.’

Whether blending truth and fiction, rewriting classics, adapting novels, or interlacing the intimate with the political, Rodrigues’ practice is rooted in writing for and with actors, seeking a poetic reconfiguration of our perception and reality through the tools of theater. His aim: to bring us together, to question the world through the power of words, bodies, and collective imagination.

Addressed to playwrights, dramaturgs, directors, actors, performers, and authors, this masterclass offers insight into Tiago Rodrigues’ methods, techniques, and approaches, followed by an open conversation where participants are invited to pose questions and discuss the challenges they face in their own creative ‘kitchens.’
