Nikos Stergiou is a graduate Surveying Engineer of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He ranked first upon admission to his School and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in Geoinformatics at NTUA, supported by a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation. He also holds a second master’s degree in Technical Project Management. For the past 20 years, he has been involved in the construction of large-scale projects as a member of technical companies in Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and Romania.
Since 2013, when he returned to Greece, he has been working with AVAX S.A. in the Energy and Industrial Projects Division, participating in the design and implementation of energy infrastructure projects, mainly renewable energy sources, for PPC, Motor Oil, and Hellenic Petroleum, among others.
Over the past decade, his professional interests have included the integration of new technologies to improve practices across the various phases of construction projects (design, construction, maintenance), such as building information modeling (BIM) through specialized software, the use of drones for 3D construction site mapping, and the application of virtual and augmented reality (VR & AR). It is widely acknowledged that the vast majority of projects are not completed within their initially projected timelines and budgets. The aforementioned technologies can contribute to reducing delays and unforeseen costs, generating benefits for all stakeholders (project owners, contractors, etc.) and, consequently, for society as a whole.
