Nicole Economides | Score for a Repertoire

“Score for a Repertoire” investigates Pontic Greek dances as living archives of displacement, transmission, and belonging. Emerging from the forced migrations of the early twentieth century, these choreographic traditions persist not through fixed notation but through collective enactment and adaptation. Dance is approached as a site where memory is continuously negotiated and where histories of rupture are carried and transformed through the body.

Working with members of the Pontic community in Peristeri, where her family once lived, Economides explores how movement operates as a mode of intergenerational remembrance. Through interviews, participation in community gatherings, and the study of traditional dances, she examines how embodied knowledge circulates beyond institutional archives and official history.

At the core of the project is a series of choreographic drawings that translate movement into visual form. Functioning as scores for activation, these drawings generate movement through interpretation and variation, foregrounding the unstable processes through which memory is transmitted and reshaped.

The drawings also serve as studies for larger-scale paintings, extending choreographic thinking into a broader visual field. Situated between choreography, drawing, and collective memory, “Score for a Repertoire” reflects on how cultural knowledge is sustained through repetition, participation, and shared acts of remembrance.
