Alexandros Vasmoulakis | Sanitary Monoliths

“Sanitary Monoliths” investigates the transformative potential of discarded sanitary ware—bathroom tiles, sinks, toilets, and bidets—recovered from demolition sites and construction waste streams. Through processes of fragmentation, reassembly, and mosaic construction, these materials are reconstituted into sculptural monuments that evoke ritual objects, archaeological remains, and sites of collective memory.

The project examines how value is assigned, lost, and reimagined through material transformation. Objects designed for everyday domestic use, once rendered obsolete and discarded, are reactivated as carriers of symbolic and spiritual resonance. Situated between ruin and renewal, the works propose a cycle of destruction and rebirth in which waste becomes a vehicle for continuity, reflection, and transcendence. Through this material inquiry, “Sanitary Monoliths” explores the intersections of ecology, labor, ritual, and the politics of preservation.
