At the age of 28, Kostas contracted a viral infection that led to end-stage heart failure. He lived for years with severe restrictions and relied on an artificial heart to stay alive. Even taking a shower required immense effort and caution. After a successful heart transplant, Kostas went back into the sea for a second first time in his life.
