At the age of 31, Athanasia developed hypertension during her pregnancy, which led to pre-eclampsia. Her doctor recommended that she see a nephrologist, who discovered that she had kidney failure. A few years later, she had to start dialysis.
Her husband was her main source of support through the pain and hardship she experienced. Thanks to a successful kidney transplant, Athanasia was able to kiss her husband again without pain, as if it were the first time.
