Thanasis Kritsakis
Thanasis Kritsakis was born in Greece and lives in Athens. He has graduated from the Department of Theater of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s School of Fine Arts, the master’s program “Political Science and Sociology” at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the post-master program “Collective Artistic Practices” of the Royal Academy of Arts (Stockholm, 2020). During his studies at the Theater Department, he participated as a director at UTE’s and Malys Theater’s masterclass (Moscow, 2015), in the Erasmus program at the Applied Theater Studies Institute of the Justus-Liebig-Universität (Giessen, Germany, 2016), and the “Poor / Rich Europe” project at the University of Salzburg (Motzarteum/ PLETA, 2018) as a director, actor, and dramaturg.
His work is based on the performing arts and, more specifically, on post-dramatic forms of theater and their connections with political theory. He aims to discover new forms of dramaturgy that could be produced through philosophical and sociological notions, examining everyday life. He believes that performing arts and the act of spectating could still create new meanings and, therefore, transformations in the social landscape and new ways of living.
As an actor, he has co-worked with directors such as Pantelis Flatsousis, Dimitris Bampilis, Dimitris Bitos, and Glykeria Kalaitzi. As an assistant director, he has collaborated with Cezaris Graužinis, Yannis Anastasakis, Roger Bernat, and Yan Duyvendak, among others. He has also been the director and dramaturg of the performances “Exercising Democracy” (“The Performance Shop,” Athens and Epidaurus Festival, June 2018; “Borderless” Biennale, Slovenia, June 2025); “A Neighborhood Symposium I, II, and III” in collaboration with the LABattoir project and Stavros Niarchos Foundation (across several places in Thessaloniki, July 2019); “P.O.D.: Protected Designation of Origins” (APARAMILLON, Athens, April 2023 and December 2024); “Sadmen” (Roes Theater, Athens, 2024); “Sezon” (Archeological Museum of Thebes, NGO “All of Greece One Culture,” 2024); “The Wondrous Story of Hor-Hor Agha” (Cultural Venue of Islahane, Thessaloniki, NGO “All of Greece One Culture,” 2024); and “The Island of Miracles” (Ancient Theatre of Samos, NGO “All of Greece One Culture,” 2024).
Thanasis Kritsakis is an Onassis AiR Fellow for 2025/26 through the Dramaturgy Fellowship.
