Despina Charitonidi

Despina Charitonidi is a sculptor based in Athens, Greece. Her work tends toward stripping down the primary elements found in urban and underwater construction sites. She focuses on reforming and transmuting these materials through a process of examining and experimenting with their properties. The results unveil a range of sculptural gestures that holistically reconsider humanity’s interference with the environment.

Her work has been presented, among others, at the Malta Biennale (2026), the Shanghai Biennale, Jiayuanhai Art Museum (China, 2025), the Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto (Italy, 2025), the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation (Greece, 2024), Ars Electronica x CIFRA (Austria, 2023), Microclima – Cinema Galleggiante (Italy, 2022), the Changwon Sculpture Biennale (Korea, 2022), the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina (Serbia, 2022), Ύλη(Matter)Hyle (Greece, 2021), the ZK/U, Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik (Germany, 2021), and Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture (Greece, 2018). In the summer of 2023, she received an “All Of Greece, One Culture” grant for the project “Bodies Floating into the Land”, supported by the Greek National Opera, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, and The Office of Hydrocommons in collaboration with Atopos CVC.

Despina Charitonidi is a participant of the Onassis AiR Extended Research Residencies program for 2026/27.
