“Moving Still” is a hybrid documentary that follows the story of a family drifting across decades and geographies. It is a constellation of moments, arrivals, departures, documents stamped and voided. At its core lies the recurring gesture of rebuilding identity. The body of the work includes images from the late 1920s through to the 1980s, half a century of change, relocation, and the urge for a new life.

The visual material blends digitized archival photographs, moving images, and AI-generated interventions, aiming to create a multilayered visual narrative that reflects the film’s core themes: memory, identity, and reconstruction. The narrative is strengthened by scenes that ‘emerge’ from selected photographs, creating a cinematic extension of the captured moment, a few minutes before and a little after the click. These scenes are filmed on 16mm, in the exact locations where the people in the archive once lived.

The documentary unfolds as a mosaic of personal and collective histories, evoking the ongoing negotiation between belonging and estrangement. Identities here are not fixed but provisional, a continuous act of improvisation.

The film rejects singular authenticity and embraces hybridity, proposing identity as something continuously composed through movement, encounter, and transformation.
