Constantine Skourlis | The Skull of God Bursts and No One Hears

“The Skull of God Bursts and No One Hears” is an immersive multi-channel spatial audio installation that deepens ongoing auditory research into socio-environmental devastation. The work grounds itself in the lignite fields of Western Macedonia, Greece. Decades of extraction, pollution, land collapse, and forced displacement have scarred the region. Field recordings captured with geophones—seismic sensors that register the earth’s tremors—are combined with custom compositional tools developed during a residency at the Intelligent Instruments Lab (University of Iceland) and Skourlis’ studio production techniques. These raw materials are sculpted into a spatial sound environment that maps environmental trauma: the grinding of machinery, the persistent hum of pollution, unstable ground, and the silence of erased communities. The installation channels these elements through an array of subwoofers, prioritizing low frequencies to deliver a bodily, tectonic impact—making extractive violence felt as much as heard. The work reveals the depth of ecological disruption through a visceral, embodied encounter that visual documentation cannot replicate.
