Introduction

From symphonic compositions to free improvisation and from Korean traditional music to sound collage, the adventurous music program of the festival’s second day evolves through a sequence of contrasts.

At the core of the festival’s second day lies the collaboration between the renowned conductor and founder of Tectonics, Ilan Volkov, with the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra, in a program where the music of Krzysztof Penderecki converses with compositions of Antonis Anissegos, Michalis Paraskakis, as well as the open-ended, improvisational work of Australian Oren Ambarchi. In parallel, a series of concerts that explore the boundaries of different musical genres and traditions shall take place in the New Stage and the foyer space of the Athens Conservatoire. From Park Jiha’s Korean musical instruments to Mariam Rezaei’s sound collage, and from the idiosyncratic compositional oeuvre of Éliane Radigue to the intense improvisations of Farida Amadou, the second day of Athens Tectonics Festival unfolds through a sequence of contrasts.

“Occam Ocean XXVI” (Éliane Radigue, 2018)

Enrico Malatesta, percussion

Éliane Radigue stopped producing electronic music and began creating collaborative works with instrumentalists in 2001. Since then, she has produced over 70 works ranging from solos and string quartets to works for orchestra. She began creating “Occam Ocean” ‒ the series that makes up most of this prolific output ‒ in 2011. The individual pieces share a creative process that relies almost solely on oral and aural transmission: musicians visit Radigue at her apartment in Paris, often returning for multiple sessions before the pieces are completed. Solo pieces are typically based on a combination of pre-prepared sonic materials from which Radigue selects sounds and a water-based image that guides the form of the piece.

Farida Amadou

In the hands of self-taught musician Farida Amadou, the electric bass turns into drums, synthesizer, and guitar. Through an array of intricate synergies and collaborations, the up-and-coming musician has developed her very own musical language, which traverses different musical genres and artistic practices. At Athens Tectonics Festival, she will present an improvised set for electric bass at the foyer of the Athens Conservatoire.

Oren Ambarchi, electric guitar

The Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra and distinguished conductor Ilan Volkov join their forces for a second time in another dynamic musical program of intense contrasts. From “Kanon” by Krzysztof Penderecki, known to a wider audience from its use in the film “Shining” by Stanley Kubrick, to the improvisational work for guitar and string orchestra by the Australian multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi, the main concert of the Athens Tectonics Festival’s second day invites the audience to rethink what exactly constitutes the symphonic music of today.

Park Jiha

Musical instruments from distant and ancient traditions, subdued fragile sounds, and a ritualistic approach to music and listening sum up the main characteristics of Korean Park Jiha’s live performances.

Mariam Rezaei

Employing vinyl records and turntables, Mariam Rezaei builds her own sound on existing found material, inviting the audience to contemplate on the potential meanings of the term ‘innovative’ in music and art.
