Food isn’t the sole preserve of dieticians and slimming salons. Before all else, it’s a means of promoting communication, and as such its virtues have been extolled in song, poetry, fiction and the cinema.

Determined to maintain a note of optimism in these difficult times, the Onassis Stegi has decided to end this season’s cycle of “Talks and Thoughts” with a feast of words, sounds and images in honour of the food which unites and animates us. The event will feature speakers who are intimately familiar with both the art of food and its delights, culinary and otherwise.

The journalist, food critic and author Alvertos Arouch will be talking to us about Mediterranean cuisine.
Professor Dimitris Potamianos of the Panteion University’s Department of Communication has published widely on wine, food and their culture, and will be exploring the role played by the sea in the culture of food.
The author Giannis Evstathiadis will be examining food’s relationship with rembetika and popular song with the aid of dozens of recorded extracts.
The writer Amanda Michalopoulou will be sharing experiences from the writing of Giantes, her culinary novel, and talking about the corpus of ‘gastronomic literature’.
The author, director and translator Achilleas Kyriakidis will be selecting and screening a selection of short films on food.

Finally, eight celebrated poets (Michalis Ganas, Giannis Evstathiadis, Dimitris Kalokyris, Elsa Korneti, Kostas Mavroudis, Pavlina Paboudi, Dinos Siotis, Giorgos Houliaras) will be hymning food in works both old and newly written for the occasion by themselves and other poets (Giorgos Beys, Nikos Demou, Nasos Theofilou, Giannis Kontos, Christoforos Liontakis, Alexandros Baras).
