Introduction

The first day of STEGI.RADIO Takeover is an explosive amalgam of modern electronic sounds.

On the Main Stage of the Onassis Stegi, the queen of electro/EBM, Helena Hauff, meets bass alchemist Lee Gamble and the tribal sounds of Animistic Beliefs. Their performance follows a live set by Selofan―two prominent figures of the Athenian synthwave scene―and an opening DJ set by the dynamic funky female duo ZonetoZone.

On the Upper Stage of the Onassis Stegi, Širom’s avant-garde folk unravels next to “twisted” traditional sounds by Anna Vs June and electro vibes by Veslemes.

In the -1, the temperature skyrockets due to the cerebral rap of Athens-based Right Clique and the bravado-filled R&B and hip hop sounds of XAΡΑ & EXPE, the hip hop sounds of the prolific MC Pink Siifu, the “twisted” dance music of upsammy, the fast-paced rhythms of the Greek DJ Pink.wav and the eclectic avant garde and synth selections of Retrograde Days.

At the Foyer +4 Mamorinos Sebgo discusses with Eirini Antonarakou on issues of integration and education of refugees and migrants in Greece, Black Athena talks with Kostas Maronitis on football culture, and the team of Entropia Records dubs the space with their live radio broadcast.

Finally, the Upper Stage hosts the screenings of the films "Who needs a heart," and "Handsworth Songs" by the Black Audio Film Collective.

Artists Bio

ZonetoΖone

ZonetoZone is a monthly show curated by Rou and Selene, two Athens-based music lovers and selectors sharing an interest in the intersection of culture and sound, exploring the diverse rap and trap music scenes around countries of the Mediterranean Sea and beyond.

Selofan

Selofan is a death-inspired love story, a match made in heaven and hell. Since their formation in the cradle of Europe back in 2012, the Athens-based duo has paved their private perditious way, reinventing the modern dark wave scene throughout the continent and worldwide with their prolific creativity and work ethic over the past decade. Well-known purveyors of allusive, synth-infused cold wave music and the driving force behind the Greek label Fabrika Records, Selofan have followed the siren call of the 1980s goth sounds and minimalism, carving out their spot at the forefront of the independent wave music scene.

Helena Hauff

Helena Hauff is a German DJ and record producer based in Hamburg. She is known for her “stripped-down techno and electro tracks” that are recorded using strictly analog equipment, and she draws influences from acid house, EBM, and industrial music.

Lee Gamble (DJ SET)

Lee Gamble is an artist, electronic music composer, and DJ. Over the last several years, Lee has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and EPs on seminal electronic music labels PAN and Hyperdub, creating his own UIQ imprint in 2015. His work incorporates several interlocking themes of hallucination, nostalgia and memory, noise, hyperreality and the imaginary, social realism, the sound objects of musique concrète, and the ever-mutating hardcore continuum. His DJ sets have been aptly described as “nothing short of outrageous [...] rollercoaster through genre and tempo, spanning sub-destroying bass and grime, dubstep infusions, plenty of breaks and a hefty dose of freaky techno [...], while always remaining highly danceable and exceptionally fun.”

Animistic Beliefs (HYBRID DJ SET)

Animistic Beliefs are inventing a new creole musical language. The Rotterdam-based duo forms from techno, IDM, and Global Club to create exhilarating hybrids, applying a fresh perspective that is both deeply personal and political. Animism is the idea found in indigenous belief systems that all objects, creatures, and places possess a spiritual essence. Pre-colonial thought, tradition, and music connected with Marvin’s Moluccan and Linh’s Vietnamese-Chinese heritage are key inspirations and tools through which the duo explore their experience as queer POC living in the Netherlands.

Širom

The intertwining of diverse musical approaches and tools, histories of sounds, and unbridled musical imagination and craftsmanship is the expansive guiding principle of the Širom trio. More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin, and Ana Kravanja, and at least as many given musical forms can be perceived as an inspiration behind the character of this ensemble. However, in their practice as well as experience, they remain anchored in their creative process to an extent that allows them to avoid merely reflecting existing patterns. What this generates is an original, stylistically homogeneous form of expression that oscillates between a wide array of folk sounds and contemporary acoustic rock-style meditations. The end result is a grounded yet still mystical minimalism. Širom’s music is contemplative but can get harder when necessary; it is closer to being band- than chamber-like, to being street as opposed to urban in nature.

Anna Vs June

Anna Papaioannou is a Greek music producer, singer, and songwriter. i She aims to combine and balance traditional and electronic sounds n her compositions by experimenting with acoustic instruments, analog synthesizers, drum machines, and vocal processing. As a freelance sound artist, she has been involved in theater performances, short films, and community projects. Since 2015, she has released and performed music as Anna Vs June.

Her recent releases are included in compilations such as the “Elsewhere VXIII,” curated by soFa (Rocket Recordings), “Donne Che Corrono Coi Lupi” (Osare! Editions), and “Mondo Organico” (Invisible, Inc). Her album ”Ersi’” was released in 2023 from Subject to Restrictions, while “Prosper Easter,” based on folk tunes and recordings from Greece, was released in 2020 by the label Yalanci.

She has played her music live at Plasmata II, Stegi Radio (Ioannina), Sonar Festival (Barcelona), Reworks Festival (Thessaloniki), Red Bull Music Festival (Berlin), and Electric Nights (Athens). She has participated in various residencies (25AV, Nature Loves Courage, Goethe virtual sound residency) and has been selected as one of the 64 faces of the “We Are Europe” platform in 2019.

She engages in various collective creative projects and continues evolving her eclectic mixing even beyond the borders of Greece.

upsammy

As electricity blossoms and leaves glisten, Thessa Torsing, aka upsammy, creates interpretative space, cleverly paradoxical in its concurrent comfort and desolation. Guided by an adventurous and narrative approach, this vividness is present in her DJ sets as well. The music she plays takes cues from trippy electronics, the more experimental side of DnB, and oddball techno but tries to avoid clear genres. As a DJ, she consolidated a firm position in the contemporary leftfield music world, which includes a residency at NTS Radio and Amsterdam club Garage Noord and invitations to festivals such as Unsound and Rewire. As a multidisciplinary artist, she researches these interactions through sound, photography, and video, explorations that simultaneously influence her music production process. Since 2017, Torsing has released a string of singles and EPs on labels Nous’klaer Audio, AD93, and Die Orakel. Her gift for full-length composition is showcased through her albums on Nous’klaer Audio (“Wild Chamber,” 2019), Dekmantel (“Zoom,” 2020), and PAN (“Germ in a Population of Buildings,” 2023). Torsing lives and works in Amsterdam.

Entropia Records

Entropia Records launched in late 2017 as a record store with a distinct aesthetic and a love for musical chaos. Based in an old apartment in the center of Athens, they’ve sought to find or build bridges between contemporary urban soundscapes and traditional rural music. As a duo of selectors, they run monthly radio residencies on Movement Radio and the Palestinian Radio Alhara; they have also played gigs and festivals in Athens and Thessaloniki and on Mount Olympus. They host live sets, installations, parties, and screenings inside their record store and at various locations and venues in Athens.
Film Descriptions
  • Who Needs a Heart (1991, 78΄, dir. John Akomfrah)

“Who Needs a Heart” is a parable of political becoming and subjective transformation and remains BAFC’s most controversial film. Akin to a sophisticated home-movie history, a record of life on the fringes in London between 1965 and 1975, the film explores the forgotten history of British Black Power through the fictional lives of a group of friends caught up in the metamorphoses of the movement’s central figure; the counter-cultural anti-hero, activist, and charismatic social bandit Michael Abdul Malik. Formerly known as Michael X and christened Michael De Freitas, he left England in 1970 and was tried and executed for his role in an unsolved murder in Trinidad in 1975. The film nevertheless holds him at a distance, tracing his career through contemporary TV and radio bulletins that counterpoint and parallel the lives of the group.

Dialogue is strictly a subsidiary element in Trevor Mathison’s allusive, inventive sound design; narrative emerges in snatches, as Akomfrah flashes back from 1972 to the early 60s and then forwards, recalling the properties of the times in music, fashion, and art. “Who Needs a Heart” is a largely silent film whose soundtrack of Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, John Coltrane, and the ritual music of the Llamas and Tibetan Monks of the Four Great Orders investigates the expressionist potential of music to create the conditions for the movement of images.

  • Handsworth Songs (1986, 58΄, dir. John Akomfrah)

A film essay on race and civil disorder in 1980s Britain and the inner city riots of 1985, “Handsworth Songs” takes as its point of departure the civil disturbances of September and October 1985 in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and the urban centers of London. Running throughout the film is the idea that the riots were the outcome of a protracted suppression by British society of black presence. The film portrays civil disorder as an opening into a secret history of dissatisfaction that is connected to the national drama of industrial decline. The titular “Songs” do not refer to musicality but rather invoke the idea of documentary as a poetic montage of associations, familiar from the British documentary cinema of John Grierson and Humphrey Jennings. “Handsworth Songs” won the British Film Institute Grierson Award for Best Documentary in 1986, the country’s most prestigious distinction in documentary cinema.

Black Athena in Conversation w/ Kostas Maronitis | Culture and Football: Honoring the shirt

Did the World Cup really take place in Qatar? Can football survive in the shape of a simulated spectacle bereft of its cultural and historical roots? Black Athena and Kostas Maronitis attempt to answer the above questions by drawing on the concepts of simulation and imagined community, Adidas and Pepsi advertisements, and fan-led campaigns for the decommodification of football.

The repeated attempts to institute the European Super League, in conjunction with Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup, made the problematic relationship between consumerism and participation in the imagined community of football explicitly apparent.

The market’s invisible hand is not limited to the allegedly objective assessment of success through monetary rewards and commercial agreements. At the same time, it increasingly defines the status of the fan and, together, their social and class position.

TV subscriptions, exclusive content on social media, purchases of season tickets, and licensed products are pulling football away from its “grassroots” beginnings and local credentials. The rejection of the traditional fan on the grounds of their limited purchasing capacities coexists harmoniously with sponsorship advertisements that sing the praise of social work committed by football clubs and the romance of amateur football.
