Introduction

What are the limits between online and offline life and how do they affect one another? In this educational program, children discover how their digital selves can affect their mental worlds and change their lives as a whole.

Friending and unfriending and blocking, love heart and sad face reactions: these are terms that characterize the online daily lives of young people today. But what are the limits between online and offline life? Might one be an extension of the other? And if so, how far might someone go to get a “like”?

In this educational program, school students will learn about the dangers and repercussions that can arise when using social media, by means of an educational film on the subject and a series of interactive activities. They will also get the chance to talk about surfing the web safely, getting advice and resolving any questions they may have. The goal of the program is to touch on issues relating to privacy, the effect social media can have on our self-image and sense of self-worth, on our friendships, on social anxiety, and on the compulsive need to be accepted by others.

In these ever-shifting digital times, where technological devices and the Internet now form part of the educational process but also the everyday realities of us all, online safety has become an issue of great consequence. It is important that young people are able to interact with and understand the technology around them, that they are prepared for this, that they have cultivated their critical thinking so as to take smart and safe decisions – this ensures that they become responsible digital citizens who can explore the online world safely and with confidence.
