Tora Hsu

Tora Hsu is a director, artist, educator, and the artistic director of 4 CHAIRS THEATRE, a Taipei-based company he co-founded in 2007. He is also a full-time lecturer in the Department of Drama at Taipei National University of the Arts and a member of the interdisciplinary performance collective Clockwork Noses. Hsu holds an MA in Advanced Theater Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (UK).

His work focuses on developing and staging original plays by Taiwanese playwrights, as well as localizing international classics and contemporary scripts. His practice often blends literary precision with social observation, seeking to situate dramatic material within Taiwan’s unique cultural and generational context. Many of his productions have been nominated for the Taishin Arts Award and have been created in collaboration with leading venues and festivals across Taiwan, including TIFA and the Taipei Arts Festival.

In 2013, he was selected as the only Asian participant in Thomas Ostermeier’s masterclass at the Venice Biennale’s International Theater Festival. He has also conducted research and residencies across Europe and Japan, including in Hideki Noda’s Dojo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater. In 2022, he was named “Person of the Year” by PAR Performing Arts Review and was supported by Cloud Gate’s Art Makers Project.

In 2025, Hsu received the Best Director award at the inaugural Taipei Theater Awards, where he also served as chief director of the ceremony.
