Gabriela de Matos is a member of the Selection Committee of the Onassis AiR OPEN CALL 2026/27.
Gabriela de Matos is a Brazilian architect, researcher, curator, and urban planner based in São Paulo. Working at the intersection of architecture and visual arts, her firm has developed exhibition design projects for major Brazilian cultural institutions since 2014. She served as co-curator of the Brazilian Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale (2023), winning the Golden Lion for Best National Representation, and was recently named one of the four most relevant Brazilian architects of 2025 by Casa Vogue.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism, a Master’s degree in Humanities and Rights, and is currently pursuing a PhD at TU Eindhoven in the Netherlands, focusing on counter-colonial curatorial narratives in Brazil. Gabriela also served as co-president of the Institute of Architects of Brazil in São Paulo and is a professor at Escola da Cidade.
Her research deeply focuses on Afro-Brazilian architecture and decolonial thought. Additionally, she serves as the Executive and Artistic Director at Cambará, an institute dedicated to promoting the production of Afro-Brazilian architecture. She is the founder of the Arquitetas Negras project, a platform dedicated to mapping and giving visibility to the work of Black female architects in Brazil. Her continuous academic and practical work, which includes an artistic residency at Cité des Arts in Paris in 2025, has led her to present lectures and participate in discussions across South and North America, as well as Europe.
