Amal Ramsis

Amal Ramsis is an Egyptian-Spanish filmmaker, born in Cairo. She is the founder of the Between Women Filmmakers’ Caravan, the first itinerant women’s film program in the Arab world, dedicated to promoting independent cinema by women and fostering dialog across the Arab world, Europe, and Latin America. Ramsis studied Law at Ain Shams University in Cairo and practiced as a lawyer for several years before pursuing her passion for cinema. She later studied film directing at Séptima Ars in Madrid. In 2009, she held the Chair of Arts and Cultures at the Euro-Arab Foundation in Granada, Spain. In 2013, she founded the Cairo International Women Film Festival, further expanding her commitment to supporting women filmmakers and independent cinema.

Alongside her filmmaking career, Ramsis has developed a strong educational practice. Since 2007, she has led the international workshop series “Women in Correspondence” across the Arab world, Europe, and Latin America. In 2019, she launched the Creative Documentary Workshops, an annual training program supporting emerging women documentary filmmakers in Egypt and Lebanon.

Her films – including “Only Dreams” (2005), “Forbidden” (2011), “The Trace of the Butterfly” (2015), and “You Come From Far Away” (2018) – have been screened at major international film festivals and have received numerous awards for their intimate, politically engaged, and visually distinctive approach.
