The Keeper of the Garden

“The Keeper of the Garden,” reimagined from the handwoven rug of the same name by Kalos&Klio, embodies the Genius Loci—the spirit of place—re-envisioning public spaces as political gardens of diversity, growth, and democracy. The work, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary culture, draws inspiration from historical apotropaic spirits, presenting an anthropomorphic figure as a digital shaman-totem to inspire dialogue on peace and unity. It blends symbols of abundance—flowers, birds, the Tree of Life—with contemporary imagery such as combat planes, missiles, and an hourglass, highlighting the fragility of democracy and signaling a shift from destruction to unity. At its core, the planet Saturn, encircled by stars, symbolizes renewal and responsibility. Accompanied by the mantra “Plant Peace Now,” the piece calls for collective action to foster unity. A luminous, ephemeral presence in a fractured world, it conveys our interconnectedness. Becoming the keepers of our garden serves as a reminder that within each individual lies the power to shape the spirit of our communities.
