The Falling City

Mixed Media Installation

Description

“The Falling City” measures emotional expression in public space using computer vision to detect affective gestures—holding hands, hugging, kissing. Each detected action activates a suspended handblown glass lamp emitting colored light (blue, green, or pink), its intensity reflecting the emotional charge of the moment. An emotional counter accumulates and displays the total seconds of affection detected.

The work asks how urban structures shape or suppress intimacy. No images are stored, and no facial recognition or invasive technologies are used.

The work is part of the Onassis Collection. It was supported by Innovative Partner Projects of the Flemish Community and presented at "Ars Electronica Festival 2025: Panic", Linz.

* The work was presented at Plásmata 3 exhibition within the framework of the European Digital Deal project, co-funded by the European Union’s “Creative Europe” program.
