Introduction

Our belief, here at the Onassis Foundation, is that education creates the necessary conditions for a collaborative society that is inclusive towards all citizens. This is why a webinar has been created especially for the staff of Greek and Municipal Police and Cyprus Police, aiming at raising awareness about the challenges faced by people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their carers.

The number of people diagnosed with ASD is growing year on year; the reason for this increase remains unclear. Alongside the sustained support and intervention of highly-trained professionals, it is important for children and adults with ASD to be given opportunities to access the society in which we live – to participate.

To this end, the Onassis Foundation is continuing its campaign to inform and educate the staff of Greek and Municipal Police across Greece about issues regarding autism for a third consecutive year, while expanding its activities in Cyprus. What obstacles might these children and adults, and their careers, face in their daily lives? How can police officers and personnel from both forces tackle these obstacles as part of their professional duties?

When it comes to shaping a society where everyone can be both different and equal, providing reliable information and raising awareness can make all the difference.
