Introduction

As part of the “Weather Engines” exhibition, "Energy communities and self-generation: The solution to a fair energy transition" workshop will take place in order to introduce participants to energy communities and self-generation.

What are the energy communities and what opportunities do they offer? How can anyone become energy-autonomous? Which are the other solutions for energy saving that can be combined with energy communities, for the most optimal results?

As the climate change shows increasingly its teeth and the global climate movement grows on in the face of the governments’ inaction to align their countries climate policies with science (limiting the planet’s temperature rise to 1,50C) before it is too late, the need for devising solutions and effectively tackling climate change becomes more and more imperative.

Focusing on energy, one of the best solutions to a fair transition is energy communities. These are local, urban cooperatives, through which citizens (either as individuals or legal entities) can produce their own, clean energy. Despite legislations that ensure favorable conditions for the establishment and operation of energy communities in our country, there is still a lack of information and support to citizens for issues pertinent to self-generation and self-consumption of clean energy. Participation of the citizens themselves in the energy transition is unavoidable. Renewable sources are the future of energy. Solar and other sources of clean energy are the elemental part of the solution to climate change and must replace fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas the soonest possible, in order to secure a sustainable future for our societies and children.

On rooftops and in farmlands, a peaceful revolution has begun: the democratization of the energy sector. Greenpeace Greece and Electra Energy work together in order to spread such initiatives across country, always with regard to energy democracy, that is, each one of us being able to produce and consume as much energy is needed to cover their needs, be autonomous and, the most important, contribute to the planet’s protection.

ELECTRA ENERGY is a social cooperative working to support the transition to a democratic, decentralized, and sustainable energy system that has citizens and local communities at its core.

For 30 years now, Greenpeace Greece has been fighting for a planet powered by 100% clean energy derived from naturally-replenished renewable resources – such as solar, wind, and other energy sources – in socially equitable ways, and has positioned itself on the front line, taking powerful and decisive action for a just, sustainable, and peaceful future.
