“Unveiling the Abstract” is a movement-based research project that combines contemporary dance, surrealism, visual art, and nude art and is inspired by the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius. The project explores the complexity of the human experience through abstract physical expression and artistic experimentation.
The event in Athens is part of the project’s research phase and consists of a workshop and a collective movement exploration. The first part of the day will include a guided workshop by Saeed Hani, introducing the dancers to the movement quality and emotional landscape at the center of the project. We will then immerse ourselves in a creative research process—through improvisation, discussion, and the development of choreographic ideas in collaboration with the participants.
The research draws visual and conceptual inspiration from surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and the dark emotional power of Francisco Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son.” These references serve as portals to deeper questions about identity, vulnerability, power, and transformation. As a Syrian artist who identifies as queer, Saeed Hani’s work is informed by personal experiences of displacement, otherness, and resilience—themes that also inform this process.
Saeed Hani: “I am really excited and honored to be in Athens for this phase of the project. It is a valuable opportunity for me to connect with the local dance community, exchange ideas, and grow artistically through this encounter. Meeting artists in Greece and engaging with their perspectives is an important part of this evolving research.”
