The legendary theater company makes its Greek debut with a rock remix of the Renaissance’s most controversial erotic tragedy.

How captivating can a blood-soaked drama from 1633 dealing with taboo subject matter —the incestuous love of a brother and a sister— be?

This contemporary, electrifying and utterly addictive production from Cheek by Jowl, the award-winning theater company famed from its bold, fresh takes on classic works, reveals John Ford’s “Τis Pity She's a Whore” in all its grim magnificence. Like a hellish version of “Romeo and Juliet”, this ‘anatomy’ of Annabella and Giovanni’s forbidden love —and the corrupt society that drives them to their death— takes place around a bed in a teenage bedchamber.

The disco, pop and rock music gets the adrenalin flowing, while the explosive combination of black humor and infernal voices catapults us into a hallucinogenic world reminiscent of “Pulp Fiction”.

In 1999 Valery Schadrin, under the auspices of the Russian Theatre Foundation, invited Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod to form a company of actors in Moscow, whose current productions include "Boris Godunov", "Twelfth Night", "Three Sisters" and "The Tempest", all of which continue to perform across the globe.

Following performances of "As You Like It" and "Le Cid" at the Bouffes du Nord, Peter Brook invited Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod to form a company of French actors to stage "Andromaque". This company is currently preparing "Ubu Roi" by Alfred Jarry.

In 1989 he was made Associate Director of the Royal National Theatre in London where his productions have included "Fuenteovejuna", "Sweeney Todd", "The Mandate" and both parts of "Angels in America". At the St Petersburg Maly Drama Theatre he has staged "The Winter's Tale".
He has received awards in Moscow, Paris, New York and London and is President of the Russian Theatre Confederation Foundation.

In 2008 he was jointly-awarded the Charlemagne Prize with Craig Ventner and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

His book, "The Actor and the Target", originally published in Russian, has since appeared in fifteen languages, including English and French.
