Introduction

Everything is a matter of education. Through triggering debates, questioning stereotypes, and fighting against the oppression of human rights, the Onassis Stegi has been consistently positioning itself in support of self-evident social issues that should be (but are not) considered given. Part of Stegi's mission and reason for existence is to respect diversity, to actively assist the demands of the LGBTQI+ community, and to constantly struggle for democracy, equality, and justice.

#Never Stop

The 15th outing of Athens Pride – taking “The Streets Tell Our Story” as its slogan – is dedicated to the memory of Zak Kostopoulos. Onassis Stegi will be active in a number of ways: with an open call for everyone to fight for their right to free expression, an information kiosk on Syntagma Square, the publication of a book honoring the memory of Zak Kostopoulos, the screening of a film with an accompanying live performance, and support for the online #vgeskaipes campaign against discrimination.

“Faster Than Light” by Kentaro Kumanomido and Thomas Anthony Owen will premiere a few days before the 2019 Athens Pride Parade: a film created in collaboration with Athens’ LGBTQI+ community – Zak Kostopoulos among them – and an accompanying live performance with artists drawn from the local drag scene.

Syntagma Square

As part of the ongoing “I’m Positive” initiative, the Onassis Stegi kiosk on Syntagma Square will be handing out informative materials on the PrEP prevention method that protects against the HIV virus. Taking #I’mPositive as its slogan, the initiative forms part of an ongoing collaboration between Onassis Stegi and the Greek Association of People Living with HIV – Positive Voice.

Zak / Zackie Oh

Under the large rainbow of the Onassis Stegi kiosk on Syntagma Square, a book about Zak Kostopoulos – published by Onassis Stegi in collaboration with the “To Rodakio” publishing house – will go on sale. The book “Zak / Zackie Oh” will be available to everyone interested in learning more about the drag performer and HIV-positive activist, with proceeds from the book being used to support his family’s fight for justice to be served in the wake of his untimely death. An event presenting the book will be held at Onassis Stegi.
