Introduction

On October 14, 2019, at 20:00 Paribartana Mohanty, one of the Fall 2019 (inter)national artists-in-residence at Onassis AiR, will give a lecture-performance about his artistic practice and research as part of the ongoing 2019/20 series of talks at Onassis AiR focusing on artistic & curatorial research practices.

Paribartana Mohanty brings a series of stories of and about labour, exploitation, debt, sacrifice, sexual harassment, alienation, suicide and deaths of artists. Focusing on Indian subcontinent, Paribartana has collected stories starting from the epic Mahabharata to recent incidents and stories around #metoo movement, which not only touch upon the questions of caste or class hierarchies and gender roles in the art world, but also open nuanced understanding of this basic question of 'creativity' or 'skill’ that are used and abused, on and on in today’s communities of the world of art. Art-fraternity, friendship, share, stake, celebration and ideal, are few trajectories, the he will address in this lecture-performance, followed or preceded by a dinner cooked by Paribartana for all the guests.

Paribartana Mohanty is a storyteller, working with video, performance-lecture, painting, writing, and curation. He obtained his Master’s degree in History of Art from the National Museum Institute, New Delhi, and a Bachelor’s in Fine Art (Printmaking) from Dhauli College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, in 2006 and 2004 respectively. He participated in the SOMA Summer Program 2018 focusing on the question of sustainability in Mexico City, supported by the Sharjah Art Foundation. Mohanty also attended an intensive summer residency program at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture supported by the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation (2016), and a workshop on “games” by artist Carsten Höller at the Botin Foundation, Santander, Spain (2017).
