A discussion about the discovery of the Higgs boson, the many Greek contributions to the discovery and what lies ahead in modern physics.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded jointly to François Englert and Peter W. Higgs “for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC).”
This series of talks traces the story of the discovery of the Higgs boson, from the first theoretical models of the early 1960s to the experimental confirmation at CERN in 2012. The many Greek contributions to the discovery will be highlighted and a look at what lies ahead in modern physics will be discussed.
In parallel, at the foyer of the 4th floor, the photo exhibition "LHC: 27 kilometers in 27 photos" will be presented. A photographic tour of the world's largest particle accelerator with a perimeter of 27 kilometers. The exhibition presents photographs of the LHC and the experiments ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb, covering a course about 20 years from the initial stage of construction until final testing and data collection. The exhibition is complemented by images of particle collisions as recorded by the detectors of the experiments.
