Academics, researchers and writers tackle the burning issue of archive access and its links to national culture.

Academics, researchers and writers tackle the burning issue of archive access and its links to national culture. Memory, identity, past, narrative: four concepts linked to archive access and use which also shed light on the multifaceted meaning of the archive. This discussion at the Onassis Stegi will be the first in a major series of events aimed at setting a dialogue in motion concerning different archive practices and their relationship to national culture.

Who administers and maintains an archive? What can be included in an archive and what cannot? How does the organization of an archive reflect social and academic structures? Who has access to an archive and how can this be changed in the Internet era? The difference between closed and open archives is a political as well as a legal issue. Today, perhaps more than ever, we are in a position to appreciate why archives are more than repositories of the past and understand that they are the spaces in which our relationship with the future takes shape.
