Duration: 54 minutes
Free admission, first come.
On Friday, June 12, at 20:30, “We Live Among You” by Maria Cyber – a Greek activist, photographer, and artist – will have its first screening in Athens, at the Upper Stage of the Onassis Stegi: a warm, human, and not in the least medical documentary about the everyday lives of people with diabetes.
What is it like to lead an everyday life with a widespread condition that nonetheless lacks the visibility it deserves? The documentary “We Live Among You” (2026), directed by Maria Katsikadakou (aka Maria Cyber), portrays the daily lives of people with type 1 diabetes through stories that move beyond stereotypes and capture real life.
Combining personal experience, emotion, and generous doses of humor, Maria Cyber attempts to shed light on the often invisible reality of a community of millions that continues to grow. By tracing the journey of a person with diabetes – from diagnosis to adapting to a new way of life – the film opens a meaningful dialogue around awareness, understanding, and empathy.
“It is brilliant, light-hearted, highly entertaining, inclusive, at times moving, not in the least medical, and deeply experiential. A well-structured documentary – delivered in just the right doses – about a disease that has firmly settled into the lives of 850,000,000 fellow human beings across the planet… and continues to grow!” (glykouli.gr).
The film premiered at the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, and will have its first screening in Athens on Friday, June 12, at the Upper Stage of the Onassis Stegi at 20:30.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion titled “The Visibility of Diabetes” in the presence of the director. Participants in the discussion include:
- Vana Koutsoudaki, General Secretary of the Athens Diabetes Association (SYDA)
- Giorgos Lionakis, teacher living with diabetes
- Konstantina Boumaki, representative of the Pancretan Association of Juvenile Diabetes (PASYNED)
- Christina Soulioti, President of the Athens Diabetes Association (SYDA)
- Athina Tzamouranou, member of Mellitus Celiac
“Ten years ago in Athens, a group of sweet-hearted people came together with a shared purpose to give visibility to something that too often goes unseen: diabetes.”
