The Onassis Foundation at the 9th Delphi Economic Forum

Furthering its long-standing partnership with the institution, the Onassis Foundation participated as a Programming Partner in the 9th Delphi Economic Forum (DEF), initiating discussions around critical issues that concern the “here and now”: from global geopolitical shifts, the digital transformation of the health sector, and harnessing people’s advantage to environmental justice, social equity, and Artificial Intelligence.

The ninth edition of the Delphi Economic Forum was successfully held, with a theme dedicated to humankind, the future of labor, and the conditions of transition to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

This year’s edition brought together more than 3,000 conferees and 800 speakers from 70 countries, aiming to delve into the intricacies and challenges of tomorrow and explore innovative solutions and strategies that can potentially lead societies toward a more sustainable future. The Onassis Foundation consolidates its presence through four panel discussions around geopolitics, health, human resources, and the relationship between environmental justice and social equity with Artificial Intelligence.

The four panel discussions tοοκ place on Friday and Saturday, April 12–13, featuring as keynote speakers Anthony S. Papadimitriou, President of the Onassis Foundation, Ioannis Boletis, Chairman of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Panos Minogiannis, General Manager of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Evangelia Nyktari, CMR Unit Scientific Director at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Sotiris Stamatiou, Group Human Resources Director at the Onassis Foundation, and Nefeli Myrodia, Head of the Onassis AiR program.

GLOBAL GEOPOLITICAL SHIFTS: IMPACTS AND STRATEGIES FOR BUSINESSES

Mr. Anthony S. Papadimitriou, President of the Onassis Foundation, spoke at the international Delphi Economic Forum IX (DEF) about the Onassis Foundation’s business activities, focusing on the shipping sector as a long-term investment. Regarding future cargo and fuel, Anthony S. Papadimitriou pointed out that “today they still present an intriguing challenge.” He also highlighted the demographic challenges and the way in which they are expected to affect the energy market, the response to climate change, and technological development. Finally, in relation to why few people today discuss the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) set of aspects, he suggested a more pragmatic approach that combines environmental protection and social responsibility with the need for successful investments.

With the Onassis Hospital at the center of the healthcare debate, the President of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Mr. Ioannis N. Boletis, spoke about its digital transformation and the importance of investing in rebuilding the solid organ donation and transplantation system in Greece. The discussion was led by the General Manager of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Mr. Panos Minogiannis, who highlighted the culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsibility that characterizes the staff of Onassis Hospital, focusing on the “dynamic relationship between the healthcare practitioner and patient.” With an eye on the future, the Supervisor Cardiologist and CMR Unit Scientific Director of the Onassis Heart Surgery Center, Ms. Evangelia Nyktari, spoke about the balance between digital and human, about digital health avatars and empathy, and, finally, about the skills that the health professionals of the present and the future must have.

He noted that success lies in deep knowledge of a company's needs, long-term target setting, encouraging a positive work environment, investing in technological capabilities, and fostering a corporate culture that adapts to the needs of the times. Finally, he stressed the importance of KPIs in a strategy’s debriefing and the data-driven decision-making process.

Ms. Nefeli Myrodia, head of the Onassis AiR project, spoke about digitization in the cultural sector, highlighting the major challenges that arise and the potential for democratization. Acknowledging the integration of the digital world into society, she mentioned three main challenges we are called upon to address: creating conditions for public dialogue, how new technologies affect the connection to truth and the concept of citizenship, and the social impact on communities facing technological exclusion. She concluded by stressing the importance of creating an action plan for the future to make technologies accessible to a broader audience and the role of the creator in the new technological age.
