The Cavafy Archive on Archives Portal Europe (APE)

The Cavafy Archive has been incorporated into Archives Portal Europe (APE), the European online portal for archival descriptions, strengthening its presence within an international research environment and a network connecting archives and collections. Archives Portal Europe brings together archival descriptions from hundreds of archival institutions across Europe and serves as a single access point to records and collections from different countries.

This initiative places the Cavafy Archive on the international map of archival infrastructures, enhancing the visibility and recognition of C. P. Cavafy as a creator of global significance, while also improving accessibility for researchers and the wider public beyond Greece.

The archive comprises more than 2,000 items, including poetry manuscripts, printed editions edited by the poet himself, prose works, notes, translations, correspondence, and photographic material, as well as the distinct archival collection of the Alekos and Rika Sengopoulos Archive. Its integration into Archives Portal Europe further strengthens its international research use and its role as a point of reference for the study of the poet’s work and historical context.

Today, the portal includes information on approximately 7,000 archival institutions, more than 1,000 of which actively contribute content, and hosts over 280 million archival descriptive units.

The inclusion was carried out in cooperation with the General State Archives of Greece (GSA). Since 2009, the General State Archives of Greece (GSA) have played a key role as Greece’s national representative to the Archives Portal Europe. Their mission is to collect, organize, and promote Greek archival heritage at a European level, while providing guidance to institutions throughout the country on the digital integration of their data into the European portal. At the same time, they ensure the promotion of activities on the Archives Portal Europe website, while digital exhibitions and historical records of institutions are highlighted internationally through the newsletter. In this way, the global visibility of Greek archival production is ensured, while simultaneously promoting interoperability and the showcasing of the country’s cultural wealth.
