Four Onassis ONX Artists Presented Work at Southbank Centre’s Creative Intelligence

A hypnotic, dreamlike film and sculpture installation offering a modern sci-fi retelling of the Buddhist folktale “The Nine-Colored Deer” from the Jataka Tales. The narrative follows a Thai woman who retraces her past life as a wild deer in order to find her true name; when she finds the courage to name herself, she transforms into the nine-colored deer and attains true bliss. Mythology, science fiction, animal extinction, reincarnation, and queer ancestral futurism coalesce into an experience of transformation and return. Huang is a visual artist, ONX Member, and film director known for his music videos for Björk, FKA twigs, and Atoms for Peace, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2019 for FKA twigs’ “Cellophane.” Commissioned by the Thailand Biennale. Uncanny and intimate, Vestige is a live dance-theater work that asks what becomes of touch when bodies are separated, extended, and remade through technology. Beginning as a physical duet, the piece transforms into a live exchange between one performer on stage and one who appears remotely through the screen via motion capture. Outside of performance times, the motion-capture studio used by the performers becomes an interactive installation for audiences to explore. Kevin Peter He is a New York-based artist and director working across performance, installation, and cinematic media, a Collider Fellow at Lincoln Center, and an Onassis ONX Member. Vestige is co-produced by Onassis ONX and supported by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, WLab, NYU Tandon, and ZeroSpace.

ONX Member Xin Liu is among the keynote speakers at the Creative Intelligence Summit, an industry day for the culture makers, artists, writers, designers, and engineers shaping our world. The program brings together artists and thinkers working across fields including beauty, quantum computing, and venture capital for artist products, expanding out to planetary-scale systems and art in which nature is the main protagonist. Speakers include Sougwen Chung, Alex Estorick, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Anab Jain, Xin Liu, and K Allado-McDowell.

An enigmatic video work in which Seoul becomes a labyrinth of regenerating delivery routes, and drivers pursue endless work under the control of a master algorithm called Dancemaster. Ernst Mo—an anagram of “Monster”—is a female rider for the fictional platform Delivery Dancer, continually pushed to optimize and complete deliveries at an ever-increasing rate. Her path keeps crossing with another mysterious rider who challenges her ideas of time and labor, prompting her to question whether another reality is possible. Delivery Dancer’s Sphere explores alienation and the gamification of work through the gig economy and platform labor. Ayoung Kim is a Seoul-based artist and ONX Member working with video, virtual reality, sound, and text, exhibited at Tate Modern, the 56th Venice Biennale, and MoMA, New York.
