Live From Mount Olympus

With more than 2 million downloads and six years on the air, the multi-award-winning podcast series by the Onassis Foundation and PRX, which has transformed the way we experience Greek myths through the medium of podcasting, is bringing its run to a close. By weaving these timeless stories together with the artistic vision of leading contemporary theater creators and the power of the audio medium to set the imagination free, the series has offered listeners of all ages an unforgettable auditory experience.

Spanning seven seasons, the podcast “Live from Mount Olympus” is an adventure drama for tweens and listeners of all ages. Our host and guide on this audio journey is the legendary Tony Award and Grammy Award winner André De Shields, who plays Hermes, god of storytelling, travelers, and thieves. Each season tells a distinct story centered on one or more gods. Through dialogue, narration, and songs, the episodes immerse us in the worlds of the gods, reveal their stories, and invite us to love these mythological characters. GodsPod brings its journey to a close in 2026, after six successful years of streaming, leaving the whole cast of gods behind to keep us company whenever we want and wherever we may be.

This richly imagined dramatic podcast is a production of the Onassis Foundation, in collaboration with Brooklyn-based theater company The TEAM, and is distributed by PRX. The series was created by Peabody Award–winning producer Julie Burstein, who is the showrunner for all seven seasons, and is directed by Tony-award winner Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”, “Hadestown”), Zhailon Levingston (“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical”, “Chicken & Biscuits”), Keenan Tyler Oliphant (“Hadestown”, “The Broken Ear Setlist”), and Josiah Davis ("Reconstructing"). The legendary André De Shields—Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award–winning performer—is Hermes, the charismatic host of our GodsPod.

The Greek gods may live high atop Mount Olympus, but their stories live on through the “Live from Mount Olympus” podcast. Before we bid the series farewell, let’s look back on its thrilling journey across seven seasons filled with gods, heroes, monsters, and myths brought vividly back to life.

In Season 7, “Apollo & Artemis” (2026), we follow the life story of the twin gods, not simply as a retelling, but as a musical, inspired by its protagonist Apollo, god of music. The story begins at the start of their lives, as their mother Leto searches for a place on Earth to give birth to them, and leads all the way to the final confrontation between the two gods and other deities. Sibling rivalries, family dynamics, encounters with fearsome monsters, and epic musical battles unfold throughout the episodes of the series’ final season.

In Season 6: "Theseus and Ariadne" (2025) - When King Minos of Crete demands fourteen young Athenians to feed to the monstrous Minotaur, Prince Theseus and a lively group of teenagers set sail. In Knossos, Minos expects his daughter Princess Ariadne to watch quietly as the Athenian tributes meet their gruesome deaths. But Eros, the mischievous god of love, takes aim with his arrows, intertwining the fate of Theseus and Ariadne. Can our young heroes somehow change the destinies of everyone around them?

In Season 5: “Pandora” (2024), Zeus, king of the gods, commands Hephaestus to sculpt a beautiful woman out of clay, and orders each god to grant her a gift. Aphrodite bathes her in grace, Hermes gives her language, Athena bestows wisdom, and Zeus himself imbues her with insatiable curiosity. Her name—as you may have already guessed—is Pandora. You may think you know her story, but you’ve never heard it told this way before.

In Season 4: “Prometheus” (2024), we follow the journey of the young Titan Prometheus, who can see the future, though his visions are never completely clear. When he glimpses a coming war that threatens the whole world, Prometheus knows he must forge an unlikely alliance with the young Olympian Zeus. However, their friendship is tested when they find they have very different ideas about how to restore a shattered world.

Season 3: “Atalanta” (2023) brings to life the dramatic story of Atalanta, a girl raised by bears and taught by the goddesses Artemis and Athena. When Atalanta meets the greatest heroes in all of Greece, who are none too happy to hunt alongside a girl, she astonishes them all.

In Season 2: “Demeter and Persephone” (2022), the young goddess Persephone is eager to strike out on her own for the first time but is quickly pulled into the underworld and must find her power in the darkness. Her mother, Demeter, fights to bring her back to the sunlight, and nothing can grow. Can the Olympians stop fighting before humanity starves?

“Live from Mount Olympus”’ Season 1: “Perseus” (2021) presents the perilous quest of Perseus to save his mother from the clutches of an evil king. Over the course of his adventures, our young hero encounters terrifying monsters, powerful gods, and a brave girl who changes his life forever.

These timeless tales delve into challenges that resonate with today's young listeners: the struggle for self-discovery and independence, the complexities of the relationships between children and parents, and the quest to bridge different worlds. “Live from Mount Olympus” offers a fresh perspective on these age-old narratives created for our time.

Live from Mount Olympus has officially entered the education space! The series has been educationally licensed with inquirED, an organization committed to introducing inquiry-based learning into classrooms, and is now accessible in 1,600 schools across the US. The American Community Schools of Athens (ACS Athens), recognizing the podcast’s educational value, has integrated Live from Mount Olympus into their 6th-grade ELA curriculum, igniting the creative thinking of young students.
