Punkthenon
Sculpture
Description
Although ancient marbles were originally colorful, their whiteness gradually became a symbol of Athenian democracy. Over time, this ‘whiteness’ took on a political dimension, often aligned with dominant cultural narratives shaped by white and male-centric perspectives. Beyond the Parthenon, white marble was also used in the construction of pavements throughout central Athens—public surfaces where social and political life converge: protests, intimate encounters, casual gatherings, and daily routines. These pavements, integral to the urban fabric, now appear dislocated and warped, forming a site of contradiction and latent instability—poised on the edge of collapse.
