A Darkness Gathers Though It Does Not Fall
Sculptural Installation
Description
The composition of this installation draws on the study of practices of fortune-telling, magic, and refrains in the local traditions of Ioannina and the wider region of Epirus. In the work of Panagiotidis, an allegorical sculptural system of hybrid creatures illuminates aspects of the intersections of the occult, cultural history, and ecology. These creatures, carrying fragments of refrains, but also sculptural elements of human and animal parts, are created as part of the bioscape and function like time machines, raising questions about possible forms of symbiosis. The refrains are recomposed and transcribed in the form of a graphic score, one with a heinous yet melancholic character, prompting at the same time questions around our interaction with nature.
