International Scholars

Greek civilization at the epicenter

With its primary focus on Greek culture, language, and society, the program for non-Greek researchers promotes Greece as a regional educational center and strengthens partnerships across the academic community.

The Fellowship Program for international scholars was introduced in 1995 and is aimed at academics of all rank―members of national Academies, PhD holders, and post-doctoral researchers―to conduct research in Greece in subjects relating to Greek culture and society. The fellowships are also aimed at citizens of Cyprus who are not Greek residents, while the Greek diaspora, second generation Greeks, and Greeks who permanently reside abroad and have been studying or have been employed in foreign universities for over 10 or 15 years, may also be accepted.

Since 1995, our international scholars have come from no fewer than 65 countries

The program aims to promote the Greek language and culture abroad, thereby creating and encouraging ties of friendship and cooperation between members of the academic community. The selection is based on the recommendations made by special committees consisting of professors, scientists, and former scholars and is validated by the Onassis Foundation's Board of Directors.

Since 1995, the Fellowship Program for International Scholars has gone through successive phases to meet the standards of a dynamic and interdisciplinary project. During the 24 years of the program's operation (1995–2019), 896 research grants and educational scholarships have been awarded to researchers from 65 countries in total: Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Congo, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldavia, Mongolia, Montenegro, MoroccoThe Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uruguay, USA, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.
