Greek scholars

Our scholars don't fly away. They fly high.

Believing that the best start in life lies in equal opportunities, the Onassis Foundation has established since 1978 an integrated and merit-based program that allows Greek scientists to continue their studies abroad.

The scholarship call for the academic year 2024-25 was announced on December 15, 2023. Deadline for application and relevant documents submission is February 29, 2024.

Awarding scholarships to Greek scientists since 1978, the Onassis Foundation has established a tradition in which it continues to invest.

Providing scholarships to students, researchers, artists, and scientists is an investment in the future.

Scholars are chosen based on the meritocratic criteria of the Onassis Foundation. The selection process involves evaluation by special committees of academic advisors. The final selection is then validated by the Board of Directors of the Onassis Foundation.

University professors, academics, and specialized scientists, as well as former scholars who now hold important positions in academic institutions in Greece and abroad, provide their advisory services on a voluntary basis.

Through the 45 years of its existence, the Scholarship Program has been constantly redesigned, following the needs of each era. Since 1978, the Foundation has awarded more than 7,600 scholarships of which 6,772 are scholarships to Greeks, to fund studies in 41 countries at a total cost of approximately $110,945,000.

Today, the Onassis Foundation scholars excel in academia, science and the arts, entrepreneurship and sports.
