Onassis Library

A contemporary cultural shelter

The Onassis Library is a cradle of culture open to all in the center of the city.

History through time

A neoclassical building in the Acropolis neighborhood, adorned with art by the most important from Greece and all over the world artists along with objects from Aristotle Onassis' Monte Carlo office and his yacht "Christina", is now home to the dynamic Onassis Library.

The Onassis Library brings together rare editions printed between the 15th century and the present, along with the Hellenic Library collections, books in various languages by Western European travelers who visited Greece from the 16th century on, the Aristotle Onassis' Personal Library, the Historical & Literary Archive, and the Onassis Archive. The C. P. Cavafy Archive, together with the Cavafy Library, as well as the collection of his personal objects and works of art with references to the poet, are part of the Onassis Library collection and are permanently housed in a specially designed space in the neoclassical building at 16 Frynichou Street in Plaka.

All the Onassis Library’s book and archive collections are continuously enhanced, digitized, and made openly accessible to the public via its website, onassislibrary.gr, through the digital applications and educational programs of the Onassis Foundation. The intention was and still is to make this unique cultural treasure available so that as many readers as possible can learn about it and find inspiration in “touching” it, even online.
