Venia Bechrakis

The visual artist Venia Bechrakis represented Greece at the OPEN 15 International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations at Venice Lido. This year’s event entitled "Flags" was held from 30 August to 30 September, in parallel with the Film Festival and the Architecture Biennale.

Venia Bechrakis’ work was entitled Floating: a naked body floats – or sinks – in the water, surrounded by banknotes and a Greek flag. Despite the fact that the body is motionless and the watery surface calm, the artist’s work implies movement, flow, along with a fact unknown to us that actually preceded, thus exciting our imagination. It is not the first time the scholar has taken part in this leading event. In 2009, she took part in the OPEN XII exhibition with a photographic installation in the historic Grand Hotel des Bains.

Venia Bechrakis studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts and on a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation, she attended a postgraduate course at New York University. In 2002, she received the Jack Goodman Award for Art and Technology. Her work has been shown in many individual and group exhibitions both in Greece and abroad.
