Tassos Boulmetis

The director of the much awarded film A Touch of Spice, the greatest commercial success in the annals of Greek cinema, with more than 1,500,000 tickets sold, distribution in 42 countries and participation in seminal international festivals, has recently been elected President of the newly-founded Hellenic Film Academy.

The Academy has been founded by FoG (Filmmakers of Greece) movement and already boasts 180 members. According to Tassos Boulmetis, "film academies are bodies created by active professionals in the field and are intended to establish a direct and substantial relationship between a country’s citizens and its local filmography in particular, as well as the art of cinema in general. Moreover, its primary goal is the evaluation of its member’s creative work by the members themselves, through the Academy awards where the best creative performances of the year in all artistic activities are voted. This year’s Academy awards will be announced in a special ceremony which will take place at Athens Concert Hall on May 3rd".

"The Academy now aspires to become a reliable and prominent interlocutor of the State in matters of cinema in Greece. At the same time, its members wish to collaborate with other institutions of significant cultural activity in Greece, like the Onassis Foundation, and to jointly organize events for audiovisual education".
