He is mainly engaged in the research project TESSA – Development of Technologies for the “Situational Sea Awareness”, and specifically in the fields of (a) high resolution computational simulation of coastal and offshore environment (waves, coastal morphology, oil pollution dissemination) and (b) dynamic decision support systems with applications in marine and coastal environment. Furthermore, Achilleas Samaras is also involved in the design and supervision of laboratory experiments on tsunami dynamics at the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory (Laboratorio di Ingegneria Idraulica – LIDR) of the same institution.

He is also a collaborating researcher in the School of Civil Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is currently participating in the following research projects: (a) “Research networking for the environmental monitoring and mitigation of adverse ecological effects in the Black Sea Basin”, part of the “Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Programme 2007–2013” and (b) “CCSEWAVS: Estimating the effects of Climate Change on the sea level and wave climate of Greek seas, coastal vulnerability and safety of coastal and marine structures”, part of the THALES programme. He also collaborates with the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki on the research project “Optimal communication plan between lateral watershed and mainstream flow. Application in small ports and fishponds” in the context of the ARCHIMEDES III project.
