A farewell to Apostolos Zambelas
Apostolos Zambelas

It was with great sorrow that family, friends and colleagues from the Onassis Foundation bid their farewells to Apostolos Zambelas at the packed church of Ayii Theodoroi at the First Cemetery of Athens.

The burial ceremony, which took place on June 7th 2010, was performed by the Archbishop of Zimbabwe, His Eminence George, on the request of the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Beautitude Theodoros II, who sent his condolences. Funeral speeches were delivered by Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, President of the Onassis Foundation, who referred to the major contribution of Apostolos Zambelas to the works of the Foundation; Prof. Ioannis Papadimitriou, former President of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center; Mr. Loukas Kaklamanis, Head of Medical Services at Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center; Pavlos Ioannidis, honorary Vice President of the Foundation, who bid his farewell to “a lifelong friend of over 50 years”; and Achilleas Svolos, businessman, close friend, fellow student and fellow rowing athlete of Apostolos Zambelas.

Apostolos Zambelas served as Financial Manager at Olympic Airlines, his duties including those of Manager of Administrative and Financial Services and Assistant General Manager. He was also one of the closest associates of Aristotle Onassis. He resigned from his position at Olympic Airlines in 1975, when company ownership was transferred to the Greek state. Later, he was appointed a permanent member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation by Aristotle S. Onassis himself. In 1976, he was elected treasurer and in 1992 Vice President of the Foundation, a position which he retained until June 30th 2005. Christina Onassis appointed him one of the executors of the will and one of the managers of the property she would bequeath to her daughter, Athina. On July 1st 2005, Apostolos Zambelas was elected Honorary Vice President of the Foundation Board and member of the Advisory Committee.

The Scholars’ Association extends their sincere condolences to Apostolos Zambelas’s children, Yiorgos and Kelly, and his wife, Clairi Galanopoulou.
