Angela Svoronou

The Onassis Foundation scholarship holder Angela Svoronou won third prize in the annual competition entitled “Greece Today”, organized by the European Central Bank in cooperation with the National Bank of Greece.

The competition took place in the context of the program “Days of Civilization - Greece 2007”, with the participation of Greek photographer - artists up to 35 years old, from Greece and abroad. The prize was accompanied by a monetary prize and the opportunity to exhibit in Frankfurt from October 31st to November 14th 2007, and then in Greece this year. By virtue of a decision by the international board of judges the first prize was awarded to Vangelis Georgas and the second to Myrto Papadopoulou.

Since 2004, the ECB has been inviting young photographers to present their own perspective of the country in which they live. URL:www.ecb.int/events/cultural/cultdays/2007/html/event07.en.html

Svoronou was awarded because "she photographs beaches in an unusual manner, expressing a particularly sceptical view of the dominant conception of Greece as a “holiday paradise” and of the importance of tourism”.

The European Central Bank plans to create a digital collection of modern photography that is to include work that has been submitted for the Annual Photography Competitions, thus demonstrating the cultural wealth of Europe through the eyes of young artists.

Angela Svoronou is to participate in the 13th Biennial for New European and Mediterranean Creators, that will be take place in Pouglia, Italy between the 22nd and 31st of May 2008, with her photographic series The Interludes. URL: www.bjcem.org/en/puglia2008/
