Evangelos Poulinas

‘Alternative Bodies’ is the title of the latest production from choreographer Evangelos Poulinas co-choreographed with Christina Mertzani. It premiered on 19 November 2015 at Dock 4 in Kassel, Germany.

‘Alternative Bodies’ is a duet that explores diversity and union. Two separate, different bodies (one male, one female) try to co-exist, to join together, to get on with each other, to recognise their similarities and differences. In their endeavour, they visit forgotten aspects of their personality and developmental process. It’s worth noting that the original score was composed by Martha Mavroidi, another Onassis Foundation scholar.

The performance will be staged in Athens on 15-16 January 2016 at the Olvio Wonderworld venue. In recent years Evangelos Poulinas has danced, choreographed and taught in Germany, Switzerland and Greece. In Greece he studied dance at the Greek National School of Dance and performed with the National Theatre of Northern Greece in works choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos and Nigel Charnock. He has also danced in productions of the Staatstheater Kassel (under the artistic direction of Johannes Wieland), Compagnie Linga, Marchel Leemann Physical Dance Theater, Constanza Macras/Dorkypark, Opera Français de New York, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Ad Lib, Arthrosis, V.VOID and in performances of Wim Vandekeybus, Jasmin Vardimon, Gerald Cassel, Gus Solomons jr, Mark Morris, Martha Graham, and Pascal Rioult.

Evangelos Poulinas holds a Master’s degree from the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University and is a graduate from the Department of Physical Education and Sport of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has won scholarships from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, Greece’s State Scholarships Foundation, New York University and danceWEB Europe. In 2015, Springboard Danse Montréal chose him as a promising, up-and-coming choreographer. His works have been presented in New York, Greece, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Canada. In 2004 he directed the video dance piece ‘without trace’ which won a prize in the British Council’s ‘3 in 3’ competition. In 2005 he founded the V.VOID dance troupe which received a grant from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture for 2008. Since 2010 he has also served as artistic director of the urban landscape festival ‘one small step’. In 2012 he relocated to Oldenburg Germany to take up the post of rehearsals director, assistant choreographer and teacher of the dance troupe of the Oldenburg State Theatre. In 2013 he founded the group ‘Eleftheri Ptosi’ (Free Fall) with whom he devised the works metamorphosis and Alternative Bodies.
