Call for participation

Simulated air travel for children on the autism spectrum.

For most of us, flying is a routine experience. For others, however, and especially for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their companions, having to deal with the many procedures involved from check-in through boarding and fastening your seatbelt to take-off can be extremely stressful.

This air travel simulation gives children and teenagers with autism or other developmental disorders and their families the opportunity to familiarize themselves with and prepare themselves for the various procedures involved in air travel, for the multiple stimulants from departure and arrivals boards to public announcements and airport signage, and for the security and baggage check.

The educational programme will be held on April 2, World Autism Awareness Day.
The conditions for participation are as follows:

1) The programme is aimed at children aged 4–16 with moderate- and high-functioning autism.
2) Participating children must be accompanied by their therapist and a parent or guardian.
3) Applications should be submitted by the supervising therapist to and include a short profile of the child or teenager. The therapist is required to attend all the sessions that will precede and prepare for the educational action.
4) The selection process will be overseen by the programme's academic associates from Athens University.
5) The action consists of three sessions.
6) The action is for a limited number of participants and the selection process will be undertaken on a first-come first-served basis.
7) The simulation will take place on the morning of 2 April 2018.
8) Applications will be accepted until 7 March 2018.

The educational programme is staged by the Onassis Foundation in collaboration with Athens International Airport under the academic aegis of Athens University and with the generous support of AEGEAN.
