‘COME ALONG! I DRAW MUSICAL NOTES!’ THIS JUNE AT THE ONASSIS CULTURAL CENTRE, ATHENS

The third Cycle of the music and visual-arts workshop of the Onassis Foundation for children with moderate intellectual disability and their parents

Thursday, 25 May. The third cycle of the Special-Education workshop ‘Come Along, I Draw Musical Notes!’ returns this June to the Onassis Cultural Centre of the Onassis Foundation. The Onassis Foundation gives the opportunity to children with moderate intellectual disability and their parents to experiment with sounds and colour through specially designed team play activities. Under the guidance of specialized educators, children develop their language, sensory, and fine motor skills, and develop their self-organization in a safe educational environment that takes into consideration their needs.

The workshop essentially aims to encourage children to express themselves through music and visual arts, and to become team players. It brings parents and children into contact with various musical instruments, making sounds and creating melodies. Musical activities are interchanged with visual-arts activities. Children get to know colours and shapes. Using a wide range of materials, they depict in paper notions related to music, such as rhythm, volume, pitch, and melody. In this way, the workshop reinforces their fine motor skills, their sense of time and space, their self-esteem and imagination.

Children benefit greatly through works they create individually or together as part of a team. Guided by our educators, they learn to express themselves and work together with other children. Furthermore, parents discover new creative ways to communicate with their children through music and visual arts.

Onassis Foundation in brief
The Onassis Foundation was founded in 1975, as specifically outlined in Aristotle Onassis’ will, in order to contribute to crucial aspects of Greek society: health, education, culture, and social solidarity. The efforts and work of the Foundation have consistently aimed (and continue to do so) at ensuring the access of as many people as possible to institutions, opportunities, and services, necessary for social prosperity and cohesion. Its long-term aim has been to release the creative potential of Greek society and ensure a better present and a more optimistic future.

The music workshop ‘Music Loves Autism’ along with the music and visual-arts workshop ‘Come Along! I Draw Musical Notes’ are two among many projects of the Onassis Foundation designed for the important and ‘sensitive’ field of Special Education. For decades the Foundation has supported special schools and integration classes through the donation of books, equipment, and teaching aid in order to facilitate the work of educators. Furthermore, the Foundation’s Scholarship programme, which was established in 1978, includes the field of Special Education for postgraduate studies and doctoral research in universities in Greece and abroad.
